You can do a great deal with photos and images in a Microsoft Word document.  Also, you can insert pictures, edit, compress and add captions to give descriptions for the images.
Essentially, when you insert the images into Word document, you can fix them wherever you desire. This is to make the layout of your document unique. Note:  Most worthy, these steps are very valid for Word 2016, 2013, and 2010.  Above all, you can come along with us only if you are using Microsoft Word Online. But, you must understand that for these processes to work, you need to have the Simplified Ribbon option disabled. Hence, any minor differences between these versions through these steps.

Inserting Images Into The Word Document
First of all, there are several methods of inserting a picture into a Word document. Probably, the simplest method is to drag the photo straight into a word document. But, the conventional approach is to use the Word’s Insert menu.

  •  Click Insert.
  •  Select Pictures, (Word 2016 and 2013) or select Picture (Word 2010).
  •  Select the image(s) you want to input into the word document.
  • You can input many images into a Word document by selecting all of them at once.
  •  Select, insert, or open.
  • Editing The Size of An in a word document
    Typically, you should format your image in a photo editing software. But, you can also use the Microsoft Word document to carry out some simple tasks like editing.
  • To re-size a photo in Word, click it only once and drag the corner box in or out to make the image bigger or smaller.
    If you need more precision, employ the Format Picture dialog box.
  • Right-click the image.
  •  Click Size and Position.
  • Change the values in the width and height boxes to create a new size of the image.
    Furthermore, you can change the width and height by percentage(%).  Most importantly, change the scale values to make the image 75 percent(%) of the size it was, or 120 percent(%).  Also, enable the Lock aspect ratio to be certain that the width and the height remain proportional.
  •  Click OK.

Word Online works a bit differently.

  •  Click the image or photo.
  •  Click the Format menu.
  •  Also, adjust the image’s size with the width and height boxes, at the top of the screen.  Likewise, enable the Lock aspect ratio to have the width and height ratio stay the same, irrespective of how you re-size the picture.
  •  Save the new changes.

Compress an Image (s) in Word Document
If you always include images into your Word document, then, you must get used to the compression options available.  Likewise, compressing Word photos/images will reduce the file size of documents that contain the photo/images.

Note: You cannot compress images/photos in Word Online, so these procedures are only valid for Word 2016, 2013, and 2010.

  • Click the picture you want to compress.
    Note: If you want to compress more than one image/photo in Word, you need to click a photo/image to enable the options below:
  • Open the Format tab in the menu.
  • Click ‘Compress Pictures’ from the Adjustable area of the menu.
    If you do not see that button, look for the small box with four arrows pointing inward.
  • Pick a compression option:
    -Click ‘Apply only to this picture’ if you want to compress only the image you’ve selected. Uncheck this choice of option to compress all the photos in the Word document.
    -Click ‘Delete cropped areas of pictures’ to have Word remove any parts of the images that you have already cropped.  Similarly, word does not delete the cropped areas but hides them. So that you can still undo the crop.  Consequently, with this option activated, you save space and remove the excess cropped pieces.
  • Pick a resolution or target output option:
    Depending on your Word version of MS Word, you might see HD (330 ppi), Print (220 ppi), Screen (150 PPI), Web (150 PPI), or email (96 ppi). Pick one of these to force Word to save the pictures with a specific number of pixels per inch. This indicates the picture quality. If you don’t know what to select, choose Use default resolution or Use document resolution.
  •  Click OK.

How to Edit Picture Layout in Word
Word offers various options for changing the layout of your pictures. For example, the text can wrap around the photo, or you can insert the picture inline with the document text.

  •  Click the image.
  • Open the layout menu, (Word 2016), or the format menu (Word 2013 and 2010).
  • Click Position and, choose one of the available options to have the picture inserted a specific part of the document.
  •  Click ‘Wrap Text’ to decide how text should appear around the picture.

Online word users can customize the wrap text options, not the image layout. You do this through the Format > Wrap Text menu.

How to Add Caption to a Photo in Word
A caption clarifies your picture to readers.  Because it is used to attribute the photo to a specific source or to help reference a picture in another part of the document.

Note: Microsoft Word Online do not support Captions

  • Right-click the image.
  • Click Insert Caption.
  • Pick a ‘caption option from the Label drop-down menu’ or make your own from the New Label button.
  •  Pick an ‘option from the position drop-down menu’ to decide where to place the caption; either above or below the image.
  •  Finally, Click OK.
    Note: You can edit the caption at any time by highlighting the existing text and typing something new.
